In this day and age, tuning into music is a universal hobby and it’s right at our fingertips. Music streaming services, such as Apple Music and Spotify, unlock an infinite world of music and podcasts on demand. In spite of these benefits, a large portion of young individuals are ditching streaming and shifting towards vinyl records. Against all odds, despite their age, classic music continues to thrive.
In recent years, the resurgence of vinyl records has gained momentum. Based on the findings of the RIAA, Recording Industry Association of America, 2025 record sales delivered a revenue exceeding $1 billion while also driving a growth of 9.3% from 2024. Furthermore, the RIAA mentioned that the US represents a 50% share of the global revenue of vinyl. While the data visualizes the ongoing trend of vinyl popularity, this still begs the question: What explains the sudden irresistible obsession for vinyl among younger generations?
For a significant portion of young music enthusiasts, physical media remains highly preffered and a deep essential. The core element is the physical presence of vinyl records, the unique satisfaction of owning and admiring them. Another major allure for collectors is acquiring and displaying records as there are countless variations available, regarding vibrant color pressings, unique custom shapes, or artwork designs. Vinyl also offers a richer enhanced audio than streaming alternatives, including flaws and all, which adds to its authentic charm.
The experience of music can be completely enchanting that triggers a heartfelt emotional response to its audience. Participating in the experience of setting a record on the turntable, dropping the needle and letting it spin is an invitation to savor the present moment while embracing oneself. It’s a one-of-one experience for young individuals, connecting through music can spark a sense of nostalgia for them. Mentally reminiscing of memories or events of an early time, or a warm remembrance of time together with family and friends. It is your own personal music that goes everywhere with you.
Considering this, vinyl and streaming services can live side by side. There is no harm with using streaming services, such as Apple Music and Spotify. Vinyl and streaming services offer different listening encounters and experiences. When streaming, it is a much better convenience to have right on you wherever you go along with millions of different music and podcasts. When using vinyl, it offers a moment to slow down and spend time with the music. The ability to have two different choices leaves many options on the table, a win-win situation: The ability to enjoy modern and traditional music.
The revival of vinyl is the very picture of styles evolving, but at the core it stays the same. The experience of a record is much bigger than just having music to listen to. It can be a collection, a whole new listening experience, and many memories for listeners. Especially for younger individuals, when your education and everyday life has the potential to become overwhelming, it is important to remind yourself to slow down for a moment and take time to enjoy a new experience.
