Using Hobbies To Gain New Skills

By Gianna Nichols

When school ends and you have a day off of work, many may have no idea what to do with their time. Sure, some will choose to clean their space, or hang out with friends and family, but in some cases people are left with absolutely nothing to do. In these situations, it may be a good idea to pick up a hobby. There are so many different hobbies to choose from that will help you gain new skills. Whether they are useful or not, they give you something to do with your time.

One hobby that many people enjoy is reading, whether it’s fictional books, historic books, classic literature, etc. Reading can help anyone gain knowledge, broaden their vocabulary, improve your focus and attention span, and help develop better critical thinking skills. Another hobby that goes along well with reading literature is writing. Although there are so many different topics you could write about, writing truly helps with creativity.

Reading and writing could be considered within the art category of hobbies. A few more within this category could be painting, which helps you gain a better understanding of details. Spotting details within different pieces of art or literature would not only be easier, but it would become easier to understand why they are important. Another hobby within this category could be photography. Learning how to use a camera and capturing different aspects of your life could be beneficial to look at later in life. This once again helps with paying attention to detail, but can also help with technology skills as you edit your photos.

If you are the type of person to focus more on your health, finding a hobby that keeps you fit may be better for you. There are so many different things you could do such as researching nutrition, picking up weight lifting, playing a sport, or even going on walks. Many people like to go out running, even going as far as training for a marathon. Doing so not only keeps your body fit, healthy, and strong, but exercising outside can truly help with mental focus.

Perhaps you are the type of person who wants to travel the world. Researching each and every place you want to travel is very important before you decide to visit, but in some cases it would also be beneficial to understand the primary language spoken in that country. This brings me to the next hobby, learning a new language. One of the most incredible parts of traveling to a new place is meeting new people and learning about different customs and cultures. If there is a certain country that you would like to explore as a whole in different trips, it could be nice to learn the primary language within that country. This would make it easier to communicate with people in the country, but also help with navigation and reading signs in restaurants or shops you stop in.

Gardening is another great hobby that can teach you so many things. By learning to garden you will learn how to properly care for plants, understand what plants grow in different seasons, and so much more. There are a few different aspects of gardening. For example, growing flowers and other plants like this can help you gain skills in landscaping. On the other hand, growing fruit and vegetable plants helps you gain skills in growing your own food. If you like the concept of gathering your own food without having to grow them, you could learn to fish or hunt as well.

There are so many other hobbies you could try to fill your time such as cooking, stargazing, and so much more. Each and every one of these depend on your time and interests. No one hobby is for everyone, and there are so many different things you could learn with them. Some may be harder to find than others, but if you know your interests and you research enough, it could be fairly easy to find the right one for you.
