Highlighting the journeys and resilience of non-traditional students.
Melanie Thomas, 63, is a full-time SUNY Niagara massage therapy student pursuing purpose after decades of varied life experiences.
What inspired you to return to school?
After being suddenly widowed and navigating the disruptions of COVID, I found myself searching for renewed direction and stability. At age 63, I enrolled as a full-time SUNY Niagara student to pursue what I believe is my unique, God-given purpose and potential.
What path did you pursue after high school instead of going straight to college?
After high school I struggled with a lot of insecurities and spent many years searching for acceptance and a sense of identity. I drifted in and out of several entry-level jobs just to pay the bills and was essentially living day-to-day without much guidance or direction.
Do you feel a guiding purpose in your life now? If so, what is it?
I feel guided by a purpose that is larger than my own individual preferences. Looking back, I can clearly see how many of my past life experiences may contribute to what I’m now called to do in service to others. I usually feel inspired and enthusiastic each day, which helps me persevere through course requirements that may not always appeal to me, as well as the financial limitations of attending college full-time.
What are some of your interests and/or hobbies? Would you like to share a fun or unusual fact about yourself?
My hobbies include interior decorating, cooking, and spending time outdoors, and I’m also active in several church activities. Over the years I’ve traveled to four continents. One fun fact about me is that I was briefly a member of a New York City girl group called The Shades of Love.
