The Writer’s Review Needs You

By Desiree Vosburgh

SUNY Niagara publishes students’ work each year in its own writer’s journal named the Writer’s Review. Rarely does the Writer’s Review skip a year. It has been published as far back as the 1980’s, a decade after the school originally opened. It is run by our very own English department. I personally have a copy of the third edition titled the Writer’s Revue back in 1990-1991.

Any student may submit to the Writer’s Review. I myself look forward to seeing what other students write. There are so many genres to choose from. It can be fiction or non-fiction as well. Last year’s edition features=d everything from a 7 page short story down to a 3 lined Haiku. It stuck with me so much I wanted to share with you all as well.

Will tear you apart

It comes to light in the dark

And that’s just the start

What do you like to write? Poems, stories? Creative nonfiction, short plays? You can submit these and more to the Review. You only have to submit two things to the email at the end of this article. Your written piece as an attachment, and a short bio. When I saw the original flyer for the Review I wondered what a bio should look like, what it should consist of. In case you are in the same boat as me I asked.

You just need to include who you are, why you write, and last but not least any other publications or relevant experience and education you might have. It’s as simple as that. Not sure you have typed up yet or do you have something and want to refine it? You have time–until February 27th to submit your work.

In addition to possibly getting your work published, later in the semester there will be a reading chosen, and of course free copies of the journal as well.

I asked an Instructor in the English department what he enjoys most about the yearly journal. Marc Pietrzykowski had said that his favorite part “is reading all the submissions and seeing the endless ways people are creative. Gives me hope, a thing that always seems in short supply.”

So, mini recap–send in your written pieces to snwreview@gmail.com as an attachment along with your short bio by February 27th. I’m so excited to see what everyone writes.
