Food Insecurity and Supporting Student Success

By Stephanie Jones

Academic success is the most important thing to a college student. It is important for students to know the resources that are available to them while they are a student. One resource available that many students may not be aware of is the campus food pantry. The location of this gem is in the Student Center G-126. Bringing awareness to students is important because the resources offered on campus are here for the benefit of the student. The college is offering this resource because it’s recognized as a necessity in the community. As a college student it is important to make sure you are eating healthily. Having a healthy diet is going to affect your mood and energy, it fuels your cognitive function, learning and memory.

This resource may be unknown to some or not utilized because of shame, resistance or simply lack of information. The statistics shown on the SUNY Niagara site show that 85% of students receive financial aid and 35% are considered non-traditional students. A high percentage of students are already in need of financial assistance. It also charts that 48% of SUNY students experienced food insecurity in the last 30 days, 54% were hungry but they didn’t have enough money to eat and 45% of students were unable to study or focus because they were hungry. Food insecurity is real and it’s here on campus also. Data and surveys show that students are experiencing food insecurity. Statistics show that most college students are receiving financial aid. Making nutrition apart of your everyday lifestyle is an important tool, students need fuel so they can focus on what’s important and that is success here at SUNY Niagara.

The purpose of the food pantry is to benefit the students, that’s why it is there. If it was not needed it wouldn’t exist. Right? The pantry is organized and stocked with nonperishable items and basic hygiene necessities. You have the option to place an order online and pick it up where the items are randomly selected based on what you choose on the form or you can choose a time to go in and shop yourself.

If you are looking to give back, you can reach out to the Office of Student Life, and the pantry is always accepting donations. There are different ways to make donations. Monetary donations can be made online and online in person. Nonperishable food items are also accepted and appreciated.
