Five Nights at Freddy’s 2: Everything We Know About the Sequel

By Jenna Higbie

Five nights at Freddy’s 2 continues the story without rehashing the first move introducing new animatronics, and a darker tone. In this review I will explore how the film explains the lore and tells the story.

The sequel takes place at the original pizzeria in 1982 and is based on the events of the series second video game where players take on the role of a night security guard who must complete their shift without being caught by the animatronics that wander throughout the building.

The animatronics include remodeled “toy” versions of Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy from the first game, their decrepit counterparts, and two new characters called the Puppet (also known as the Marionette)

On December 5th the sequel opened 3,412 theatres in the U.S and Canada and surpassed expectations with $63 million dollars in ticket sales, according to studio estimates.

This is the second biggest horror movie opening behind ‘’ The Conjuring: Last Rites’’.

During opening weekend I went to see the movie and overall I would rate the movie a 7/10. As an original Five Nights at Freddy’s lover I really liked the fact how they went back to the original location and I also liked how they portrayed the toy animatronics from the second game.

In the movie they introduced new key animatronics Mangle, Balloon Boy, and The Marionette alongside the toy versions of Freddy, Bonnie ,Foxy and Chica.

I appreciated the fact that the directors of the movie increased the focus more on the game unlike the first movie and made most of the jumpscares more in your face as if you are in the video game.

This movie worked well for some fans due to its deep lore, easter eggs, a creep new character etc. Some critics noticed pacing and animatronic presence issues compared to the first film.

The main things critics stated was the movie’s story such as poor writing and pacing, shallow character development, and lack of horror.

The only thing I didn’t necessarily like about this sequel was that it wasn’t as scary as I wanted it to be. Since it has a PG 13 rating the audience didn’t get to experience real horror scenes, for example at the beginning of the film when the character Charlotte dies while trying to save the boy we only got to see very little blood, not the cause of death or how she went through it.

The visuals and special effects in the movie have been praised by fans and critics The film introduces the “Toy” versions of the animatronics (Toy Freddy, Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, etc.), which are shinier and more toy-like, as well as older, “Withered” prototypes that feature skinless faces and dangling limbs. These detailed creations are considered a visual high point of the movie.

Overall Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 delivers a fun continuation of the series. Even though it has some flaws it offers things fans will enjoy and is worth watching.
