The Price of Freedom: Honoring our Veterans

By Jenna Higbie

Veterans day is a day to remember and celebrate everyone who served our country in the military. We honor their patriotism and bravery to serve every November 11.

Since 1918 celebrations all around the country have included parades, ceremonies, and other events to show gratitude for their service in both at war and at peace.

The Town of Niagara and the Town of Niagara Helping Hands are joining together to honor veterans at a ceremony and luncheon at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Veterans Memorial Community Park. There will be a presentation of colors, an opening prayer and a pledge.

Local towns are holding events to honor this holiday, The Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park will be having two ceremonies one at 10 am and the other at 3pm. Admission is free for veterans and the park will be open until 4 pm, additionally some local restaurants such as Chick Fil A are offering specials for veterans on that day.

Seth Lamar ( the head of the veteran services) shared info about the background of the memorial park here on campus and the events that the school holds for this holiday.

SUNY Niagara holds an annual Veterans day ceremony usually on a day prior to Veterans day itself. This year the ceremony will be held Monday November 10th at 11 am, this is open to all students, faculty and even the public. Dr. Lloyd Holmes, the President of SUNY Niagara will present a speech while a wreath is placed on the monument in honor of all veterans past and present. At the end of the ceremony any veterans that are in attendance are invited to come share their name, branch of service, and the amount of years they served, following a reception in the A building.

Throughout November flags will be displayed and are able to purchase for a donation to benefit the veterans foundation.

The Veterans Memorial originated in 1976, the original monument was much smaller and was erected in celebration of the USAs bicentennial marking 200 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Other colleges and universities are also holding events to honor all veterans. University Of Buffalo will also be hosting a ceremony on November 11th at 11am in the Buffalo Room followed by refreshments.

Many fast food restaurants offer deals on Veterans Day, including free meals or discounts for veterans and active duty military personnel. Some participating chains include Buffalo wild wings ( free boneless and fries), Chilis ( free entree from a selected menu), Wendy’s ( free breakfast combo), and Denny’s ( free grand slam breakfast). In order to receive these deals you must bring proof of service and also check with your local franchise, as offers can vary by location and are often for dine in only.

Veterans Day reminds us that the freedom and opportunities we enjoy today were brought by the courage, and sacrifice that people made. It’s not only a time to honor the fallen but also to recognize the living heroes who continue to shape our communities.
