With spring registration in full swing, students across campus are excitedly planning their schedules and looking ahead to a new semester with new opportunities. Advisor offices are getting more crowded as enrolled students begin to have conversations with their advisors about majors, new interests, and electives! Many students have also been giving recommendations about their favorite classes and professors.
“I would recommend students take so
cial work classes, even if it has nothing to do with their majors,” says Sophomore, Lilly Mariglia. “The classes can be very insightful and informative for how we can help and advocate for people.”
Registering for classes can be a difficult and stressful process, especially for a new student. However, Degree Works is a necessary tool that will help prepare you for success. By accessing this site through the Suny Niagara homepage, you can see all the courses and credits you are required to take in order to graduate. After familiarizing yourself with the classes you have decided to enroll in, set up a meeting with your academic advisor (which will be listed at the top of your Degree Works page). They will support you in your choices and aid you in making the best decisions regarding time management and workload. Furthermore, they will give you a RAP number which you will use before you begin the registration process.
Degree Works also offers further options including changing your major, adding a major or even changing your advisor if you happen to come across any challenges/difficulties that could be made easier by another faculty worker. By clicking on the Change Major tab, you can either change it or add a new major/minor. As for switching your advisor, you can stop in the Student Success Center where the employees will have you fill out a confidential form in which you explain why you would like a different advisor.
Besides advisors, professors are also a big part of class selection. Whether it’s an instructor known for their kindness, knowledge, or even their policies, it can guide students into choosing the best class for themselves.
“Professor Laurie Ryan, a business instructor here at SUNY Niagara, makes every lesson feel like a conversation,” says a sophomore who wishes to remain anonymous. She truly cares about each and every one of her students and it makes you actually want to go to class.”
As registration continues, students are becoming more eager to share what they’ve learned through past semesters. This information isn’t just coming from a textbook, but rather from the classes and professors that have instilled a lasting, positive impression!
