Remarkably Bright Creatures: A Heartwarming Tale of Friendship and Discovery

By Abbi DiRienzo

Shelby Van Pelt’s novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures, has quickly become a favorite for readers craving a story that blends warmth, humor, and emotional depth. Set in a small coastal town, the book follows the unlikely friendship between Tova, a lonely widow working at an aquarium, and a surprisingly clever octopus named Marcellus. Now, it is coming to the screen! A TV adaptation is currently in development, bringing the magnificent world of Tova and Marcellus the octopus to a wider audience. Although the release date has not yet been publicized, it has been announced that Olivia Newman will be the director (who also directed Where the Crawdads Sing).

Van Pelt’s storytelling is filled with brilliant humor and moments of quiet reflection. As one character notes, “Sometimes the most extraordinary truths come from the most unexpected places.” The novel explores themes of loss, healing, and the power of connection in ways that feel both genuine and uplifting.

Readers have praised the book for its rich characters and heartwarming narrative. Nicole DiRienzo, a devoted reader, shared “I think the part of the book that stuck with me the most was learning so much about the octopus and how smart they really are. Before this book, I really had little to no interest in the octopus. However, after reading this book, I have wanted to learn more about them.” Not only does this book engage in an entertaining story, but it goes beyond the limitations of fiction and incorporates many elaborate and interesting facts about octopi.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is a strong reminder that it’s never too late to find hope and rediscover yourself. Nicole DiRienzo also stated, “The theme I took away from this book was how unexpected friendships are often the best ones,” emphasizing the lasting impression the novel leaves on its audience.

In the end, Remarkably Bright Creatures is more than just a novel—it’s a powerful celebration of resilience, friendship, and the unexpected ways life can surprise us. It’s the kind of story that stays with you, offering hope and inspiration long after the final page is turned!
