“After this time I excelled all in influence, although I possessed no more official power than the others who were my colleagues.” -Augustus
Great leaders come in all shapes and sizes–but what holds true consistently? A great leader listens to the people, and shapes the government in the peoples’ will. This applies to more than just roles in the Government, but also the leadership of our school. Today, we will be talking about our recently appointed President, Dr. Lloyd A. Holmes.
Interviewees
In order to uncover the truth behind his views of leadership and learn more about his character, interviews were held with President Holmes, Dr. John Delate (Vice President of Student Services) and Dr. Brian Michel (Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations and Strategic Initiatives.)
Leadership Style and Character
Dr. Holmes has a leadership style that revolves around comradery, acknowledging the idea that everyone has a role and significance. “My hope is that we have created an environment here where people recognize that no matter who you are, no matter what position you are in, you are valuable and you are valued.” (President Holmes.) While talking to President Holmes, I was able to assess his character. What I found was nothing short of true humility and a kind, charitable, down to Earth nature. “As a leader, the work that you do isn’t about you. It should be about the greater good. When, as a leader, you get caught up in being so concerned about the recognition that you get… you lose sight of the goal.” Upon speaking with President Holmes, it is clear that he cares deeply about curating an environment where students feel their needs are met, and that they can feel comfortable being themselves. President Holmes has a level of observation for such matters–reminiscent of ‘Sherlock.’ Aptly named.
Thoughts and Opinions
The best way to learn about someone is to pick the brains of someone who’s closely acquainted with them. Interviews were conducted with Dr. John Delate, Vice President of Student Services, and Dr. Brian Michel, Assistant to the President for Governmental Relations & Strategic Initiatives .
What is your favorite thing about President Holmes?
Dr. Michel: “Aside from his impeccable sense of fashion and décor, I have enjoyed getting to know him as a person. Over this past year, I have been amazed by his talent as a finished carpenter and have even been inspired to take on a few projects of my own at home. One thing about him that few know is that he is an accomplished pianist. Although he has not performed in some time, I hope to one day hear him play for us.”
Dr. Delate: “President Holmes tolerates my humor. I chuckle when he rolls his eyes at one of my “dad” jokes. He creates a very relaxing atmosphere in his office, where everyone feels welcomed. Above all, he has a smile that is healing.”
How does President Holmes represent the Thunderwolves’ spirit?
Dr. Michel: “Dr. Holmes is truly a man of the people with many talents. One of my favorite things about him is how he has managed to embed himself in the community as a friend, colleague, and mentor. From attending sports games to his efforts to meet with every staff member in the institution, there is no denying his presence and all that he has come to mean to us in such a short time. What I find most telling about his character is what he does for others when he thinks no one is watching. This past year, I was moved to learn of a sizable private donation he committed to a student club to ensure they had enough funding to take every student who wanted to learn about government to Washington, D.C. Thanks to his generosity, no one was left behind, and our students were able to enjoy a wonderful learning opportunity.”
Dr. Delate: “President Holmes supports student programs by attending games and events. He loves to interact with students, and he displays a spirit that is uplifting and fun. President Holmes adheres to the Confucian maxim by taking what he does very seriously, but not taking himself too seriously. He loves to laugh and emit joy.”
President Holmes goes beyond the status quo for both a good man, and a great leader, applying both good moral character and a devout sense of caring to ensure a safe place for all seeking higher education. Tolstoy eloquently sums up the character of President Holmes in Anna Karenina “He looked at people as they were, and treated them with simplicity and honesty.”
