Minecraft Movie: Not As Bad As it Sounds

By Tori Mayes

The Minecraft Movie is one of 2025’s most anticipated movies, having come out at the beginning of April. There was a lot of excitement on the internet when the movie was first announced, but the more the internet learned about it the more the excitement morphed into anticipation for the movie to be bad. Now that it’s out, is the movie actually as awful as people were expecting? Or is the movie being over-hated by the general public? As an avid Minecraft player myself, I was always skeptical about the movie when I first learned it existed. Now that I have seen it, I can comfortably provide a spoiler-free and open-minded review of its structure for anyone still contemplating if it’s worth it.

The start of the movie hits you very fast, with a lot of information about the world you’re about to jump into. And before you can comprehend said information, it throws even more at you via providing context and an introduction for every main character. We are introduced to each one with shallow bits of their lives, but in an odd way it almost provides the perfect amount of context to explain why all of their stories come together. It can be tough to follow, especially in the beginning, but if you look at the big picture you understand the shallow bits are rather okay. However, there are random moments throughout the film that try to be deeper than they can fit into the 1 hour and 40 minute movie, which always provides a weird and laughably botched sentimental scene. It’s clear the less deep and less serious this movie takes itself, the better. Any attempt they make at anything else results in a bad part of the story.

Throughout the storyline, it’s clear the movie appeals to its demographic: the kids – mostly under age 14 – that play the game nowadays. There are several adults who have played the game for years who are unhappy with the quality of the movie, forgetting that it’s meant to be a kids movie. If this were aimed at adults, then yes it absolutely sucks. But it’s cute for what it is. There are several elements of the world they created that only make sense for the movie and aren’t an actual part of the game, too. It causes a weird disconnect for people who know and love the game as is. Trying to add things to it to make it seem more related to real life than it actually is made parts painful to watch.

All in all, there is something for everyone of all ages to enjoy in this movie. The ending has a very adorable message and there are plenty of people who know the game and people who don’t that both seem to enjoy the movie a fair bit. I will admit my skeptical attitude faded after the first couple minutes and I actually enjoyed laughing at the movie. Whether because of cringe-worthy moments, or because certain parts appealed to my humor, it was just fun to be open and enjoy it despite what I see some critics say. If you are contemplating seeing it, I highly suggest it. Just make sure you watch it with the same kind of open mind.
