TikTok, a popular chinese app used by more than 170 million people is on the verge of getting shut down for good. On Sunday January 19th 2025 the app went unresponsive to many users, and was unavailable for installment via all app stores. Approximately 12 hours after going dark the app slowly started running again due to an executive extension made by President Donald J Trump.
On Trump’s first day of office he decided to sign a 90 day extension of the app, giving it time for it to be bought by an American company. Despite his feelings for the app during his first presidency he is now being vocal about saving the app. “The unfortunate timing of section 2(a) of the Act (which implemented when the ban would take effect) − one day before I took office as the 47th President of the United States − interferes with my ability to assess the national security and foreign policy implications of the the Act’s prohibitions before they take effect,” Trump wrote in his executive order.
TikTok showed its appreciation for Trump by putting out a statement on X that reads ‘’ In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service. We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive. It’s a strong stand for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship. We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States’’.
Tesla owner and billionaire Elon Musk as well as a content creator known as ‘’ Mr Beast’’ have brought up the idea of possibly buying the app but nothing has been made official. For now the app is waiting to be bought before the 90 days are up and is unavailable for installment.
