In a Philadelphia Eagles 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl LIX broke records this year with an average of 127.7 million viewers. This year’s season finale viewership brought in 3% more viewers than last year’s game, which averaged 123.7 million viewers. According to Fox Sports, viewership peaked during the second quarter, from 8:00 to 8:15pm, with 137.7 million viewers.
When the game brought in most viewers, it seems many fans started tuning in when the Chiefs were down big time during the first half. At this point in the game, Philadelphia had a huge lead over Kansas City after Eagles rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean intercepted Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a pick-six.
In a poll conducted by Emerson College Polling, they have collected data of who the public was rooting for in the game. The results of the poll showed that 29% wanted the Chiefs to win, 35% wanted the Eagles to win, and the other 36% did not have a favorite.
There was a lot of talk about how NFL fans were going to boycott the game after speculation that referees and officials were helping the Chiefs win games. Ultimately, the plan of not watching the big game did not hold up for many viewers.
The Super Bowl halftime show featuring Kendrick Lamar brought in approximately 133.5 million viewers, which also makes it the most viewed halftime show ever. After the halftime show was over, it seemed quite a few people stopped watching the program.
