Companion is a horror/science fiction film that is captivating, intense and at times funny. The director of the film is Drew Hancock, and the main leads of the film are Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid. The main plot of the film is a group of friends going on a weekend trip but eventually things turn violent when a robot loses control. The film was released on January 31, 2025, and has made 26 million dollars so far with a 10-million-dollar budget.
According to Rotten Tomatoes the critics score is 94 percent, and the audience score is 89 percent. I agree with both scores because this is a great movie, and it does deserve the hype. As mentioned in Rotten Tomatoes, Brian Bisesi states, “Companion’s twists, turns, and stellar pacing keep you engaged for the film’s entire runtime, but what makes the film stand out from the pack of similarly themed stories is its effortless sense of humor and an excellent performance from Sophie Thatcher.” The movie has surprising twists and turns that will have an audience member on the edge of their seat.
The film isn’t shy at being comedic and for the most part, it delivers on that. The characters have interesting personalities that make them feel different from each other. Sometimes in horror films characters can feel generic and dry but, in this case, they all feel like real people that could exist in our reality. My favorite performance out of the whole film would have to be Jack Quaid, he stole the show. His comedic timing was great in this film, and I would love for him to continue being in horror films. Sophie Thatcher also delivers a fantastic performance, and I can see why people claim her as a rising star in Hollywood. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Cody Leach states, “Companion is a brilliant horror comedy that keeps you guessing as much as it keeps you laughing. Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid are incredible together.” Many people’s take away in the film is that these actors did a phenomenal job at bringing these characters to life.
The horror aspect of the film is great as well, it’s not as violent as some other horror movies out there, but it still does deliver. The movie at times plays as a thriller relying on tension to keep the audience engaged. Even though this movie is horror and science fiction, I would classify it as a thriller as well, similarly, to Get Out and The Shining. The world building in this film is fascinating because the futuristic world feels like it could actually exist someday. The world is like a grounded version of Blade Runner.
The pacing of the film had a fast tempo, but it did move smoothly. I could see some people saying the film moves quite fast, but I think it strengthens the film. The film has witty dialogue that benefits off the fast pacing. The pacing of the film will keep the audience’s attention because of the number of things that are going on in each scene. Overall, I believe if an audience member enjoys horror films with a touch of comedy, they will have a wonderful experience.
