Donating for Christmas? How it’s Important to Give Back

By: Emma Hoang

Have you ever seen those angel trees at church or those donation bins at Walmart and other various places? Have you considered donating to those in need before? Well, Christmas is the perfect time to give back or at least try to! Not only are you helping those in need, it also can boost your mood and make you feel like a better person. It also isn’t hard to do so it requires minimal time and effort to help someone out.

Donations can stem from multiple different areas like toys for tots, donating clothes to a local thrift store, giving back to the homeless shelters, and just doing good for your local community. There are plenty of places to find these donation centers all around you. From bins at the supermarket, angel trees at churches, and nonprofit organizations, the options are endless. I’ve asked two people in my life about what donating means to them and how they feel about giving back to those in need, especially during this time of year. Let’s see what they have to say!

The first person is my younger sister, Sydney. She says, “I’m grateful to be able to have opportunities to help kids in need in order to have a good Christmas, without having their parents to worry if they could have a fun holiday. Christmas should be joyful and not have to carry financial burdens in order to enjoy it. If you have the resources to donate, definitely do it.” Just like myself, Sydney loves to give back as she has the financial means to do it. She clearly wants to help out families in need and wants them to have a good Christmas just like us. It’s very important to help out and it makes you feel like a good person to know that you impacted someone in a positive way.

The second person is my boyfriend, Evan. He says, “I very much enjoy donating. It allows you to help out fellow people in need and perhaps get rid of things that are no longer of use to you. I like that it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling inside, especially around the holiday season. Being kind to people through things like donating is what life is really about.” It’s a common theme of donating, feeling good about yourself that you helped someone in need. Just the thought of knowing someone is going to have a better life experience through a simple action of your own kindness is amazing.

In my personal experience, I’ve done community service for the Salvation Army. It wasn’t during Christmas time but the idea of donating items to families in need whether it be toys for younger children, clothes for those who need it, or just money donations, it makes you a better person. Even just doing community service there for the short amount of time I did, I’ve met wonderful people and heard their stories. You can show your love to these people in need through donating and hearing out their experiences, validating them and making sure they are being supported.

In conclusion, if you have the funds and time to donate, I highly recommend it. You are helping out families, children, and those who struggle financially to help live a better life. During this Christmas season, donations help out so much. A child could have a great Christmas with that one toy you donated and their parents won’t have to stress about buying them a toy they can’t afford with their financial means. Christmas is all about giving and I hope everyone takes donating into consideration if they can.
