Calling All Writers For Creative Writing Club!

By Alicia Smith

The Creative Writing Club is a great opportunity for writers from various backgrounds to gather and share their ideas, works, and experiences to improve their writing. The Creative Writing Club is interested in hosting different events; this semester they will be doing an Open Mic Reading. The English department does a literary journal called The Writer’s Review to which the club will be participating.

Creative Writing Club is newly established on campus and holds bi-weekly meetings. The club does not focus on any specific genre of writing or any certain style. They have writers from different academic disciplines that also partake in club meetings and activities. There are writers that focus solely on short stories, some who specialize in poetry, and some writers so dabble in a little of everything. Students can join the club for different reasons. When the forming club members were asked, “why are you in the Creative Writing Club?” These are some of the responses:

“I had helped start the Creative Writing Club so that way I can be with like minded individuals. Not only do I get to share my work with others, I am becoming more comfortable actually putting myself out there. Getting feedback on my pieces has been invaluable. I know that I am creating friendships that will last a lifetime no matter where our writing takes us.”

“I helped in getting CWC up and running because I want to meet people who enjoy writing like I do. I want to improve my writing with other people and find new voices to write with. Most importantly, writing is fun for me and I want to share that.”

They also have a Discord Server where they have different resources, and share ideas. Their biggest appeal may be that they do writing prompts regularly. Writing prompts are situations or questions that are meant to spark creativity while writing and possibly lead to a completed story or poem. For example: Create three original screen names and passwords that the Easter Bunny may use when logging in to check his email.

Not every prompt is a masterpiece and not every masterpiece starts as a prompt. Once you have your personal masterpiece you may consider submitting it to the Writer’s Review.

In the past, the English department has published a literary journal, called The Writer’s Review. For those who don’t know, a literary journal is a collection of work from a variety of people. There can be poetry, stories, and even art sometimes. The next issue of the Writer’s Review will be out in the spring semester of 2025. Anyone interested in submitting their own work can send their submission to SNWReview@gmail.com, please include your name in the document.

For those who may want to present their work to an audience, it is highly suggested that you attend the Open Mic Reading hosted by the Creative Writing Club.

The Creative Writing Club is hosting an Open Mic Reading on Wednesday December 4th at 4pm in room G244. Open Mic Readings are a chance for people to share literary works with an audience. At the Open Mic Reading some may read poetry, others may read a section of a story, some people may read something they read that inspired them! Food and drinks will be available and all are welcome.
